MBIZI lagoon house

20 Perfect Guest Ratings in Just Seven Months – What Makes This Whale Coast Holiday Home So Special?

Twenty guest reviews. Every single one awarded the highest overall rating. An almost fully booked calendar. And a holiday home near Hermanus that we nearly walked away from. This is the story of MBIZI lagoon house.

20 Reviews. 20 Top Ratings. And a Story We Never Expected.

Sometimes we look at our guest reviews and can hardly believe what we are reading.

In March 2026, we opened the doors of MBIZI lagoon house, our privately owned luxury holiday home on South Africa's beautiful Whale Coast, to our very first holiday guests.

Just seven months later, we have reached a milestone that means the world to us:

20 guest reviews. Every single one with the highest possible overall rating on the respective booking platform.

From Airbnb to Booking.com, our guests have been wonderfully generous with their feedback.

And there is something else we find almost unbelievable.

Despite being relatively new to holiday rentals – and having taken an entire month out for further improvements – our booking calendar has been almost continuously filled.

As of October 2026, only a handful of short gaps remain available before the end of April 2027.

For a holiday home that has only recently opened its doors, that feels extraordinary.

But what makes us happiest is not simply the numbers.

It is knowing that the place we fell in love with has become somewhere other people genuinely love spending time.

And the story of how that happened is perhaps not quite what you would expect.

We Weren't Actually Looking for This House

When our South African adventure began, we had a rather different plan.

We had been looking at properties and exploring the possibility of buying a plot of land where we could build our own home.

We wanted something special. Somewhere surrounded by nature. Somewhere that could eventually become our home in South Africa.

Then we came across a house in Fisherhaven, overlooking the Bot River Lagoon.

And to be perfectly honest?

We weren't particularly impressed with the house itself.

It was full of furniture, and it was difficult to imagine how the spaces could look and feel.

It certainly wasn't a case of walking through the front door and immediately thinking, "This is it!"

But then we looked outside.

And everything changed.

And Then We Saw the Wild Horses

There are moments in life that stay with you forever.

For us, seeing the wild horses of Fisherhaven was one of them.

There they were, roaming freely through the remarkable landscape surrounding the Bot River Lagoon.

Behind them, the water. The mountains. The enormous African sky.

And suddenly, we weren't really looking at the house anymore.

We were imagining mornings on the terrace. Coffee overlooking the lagoon. Evenings with friends. The changing light on the water.

And perhaps, every now and then, those beautiful wild horses wandering past.

We had come looking for a property. Instead, we had found a place that captured our hearts.

Our imagination ran away with us.

And we made a rather spontaneous decision.

We bought the house.

Not exactly love at first sight! When we first discovered the house, it was difficult to imagine what it might become. But the location had already stolen our hearts.
The moment everything changed. The free-roaming wild horses of Fisherhaven helped us see something far beyond the house itself.

From an Ordinary House to a Home We Love

Once we had made the decision, our imagination turned into plans.

We didn't want to create just another holiday rental.

We wanted to create a home.

Our future home in South Africa.

A place where we would one day spend much more of our lives, surrounded by the nature and landscape we had fallen in love with.

And because we were creating it for ourselves, we approached every decision differently.

We thought about how a home should feel when you arrive after a long journey.

How comfortably you should sleep.

How much space you need when travelling with family or friends.

Whether the kitchen has everything you actually want to use.

And whether you can spend an entire day at home without feeling that you are missing anything.

We invested time, care and attention in transforming the house into the place we had imagined.

Not everything happened at once. Even after welcoming our first guests, we continued improving and refining details, taking a full month out of the rental calendar to work on the house.

Because for us, MBIZI has never been a finished commercial product.

It is a home we continue to care for.

The transformation of MBIZI lagoon house – created with love, attention to detail and the dream of one day calling this extraordinary place home.

Luxury Is in the Details – Especially the Ones You Actually Use

Of course, the setting is spectacular.

But a truly memorable luxury holiday home near Hermanus needs to offer more than beautiful views.

It needs to feel wonderful to live in.

That is why we paid so much attention to the things that can make an enormous difference to a holiday.

A really good night's sleep, for example.

Our bedrooms feature individually adjustable Sloom mattresses, because we believe that a comfortable bed is one of the most important luxuries of all.

We wanted a kitchen that makes cooking together a pleasure, rather than one where you discover halfway through dinner that something essential is missing.

We wanted inviting indoor and outdoor living spaces, thoughtful furnishings and beautiful places to sit, talk, read or simply enjoy the view.

And we wanted a home where everything feels carefully considered, without ever feeling formal.

Today, MBIZI offers four bedrooms and four bathrooms for up to eight guests, making it especially appealing for families, two couples, multigenerational holidays and groups of friends travelling together.

There is a private swimming pool, generous living spaces and the Bot River Lagoon right on the doorstep.

But perhaps the most important detail is something you cannot put on an amenities list.

We want our guests to feel that someone genuinely cares about their stay.

More Than a Luxury Holiday Rental – A Truly Personal Welcome

One of the things that makes us particularly proud of our guest feedback is how often the personal experience matters just as much as the house itself.

MBIZI lagoon house is privately owned, and we remain personally involved in welcoming and looking after our guests.

We are supported by wonderful local guest managers who help ensure that everything runs smoothly, from preparing the house to welcoming arrivals and assisting during a stay.

Together, we want to offer something that can sometimes get lost in larger holiday accommodation businesses:

The feeling that you are a guest, not simply a booking number.

We love hearing about our guests' experiences.

We welcome suggestions.

And if something can be improved, we genuinely want to know.

That personal approach is especially important to us because we are sharing a place we love ourselves.

And judging by the wonderful messages we receive, our guests can feel the difference.

A Luxury Holiday Home Near Hermanus – With Wild Horses on Your Doorstep

Of course, there is one thing we could never have created ourselves.

The location.

MBIZI lagoon house sits in the private Middlevlei Estate in Fisherhaven, overlooking the beautiful Bot River Lagoon on South Africa's Whale Coast.

Here, nature is not something you have to drive somewhere to experience.

It is all around you.

Birds gather along the water. The lagoon changes colour throughout the day. The surrounding mountains glow in the evening light.

And then there are the wild horses of Fisherhaven.

These remarkable horses roam freely through the area and occasionally appear near the house.

There are no guarantees and no scheduled encounters.

But that is exactly what makes seeing them so magical.

Imagine sitting on the terrace with your morning coffee and suddenly spotting horses moving quietly through the landscape.

It is the kind of experience that stays with you long after a holiday has ended.

And it is one of the reasons why we believe MBIZI offers something genuinely different from a conventional holiday home in Hermanus.

Whale Watching, Wine Estates, Beaches – And a Place to Come Home To

While MBIZI feels wonderfully peaceful, some of the Western Cape's most memorable experiences are within easy reach.

Hermanus, famous for its spectacular whale watching, is only a short drive away.

During whale season, southern right whales visit Walker Bay, making this one of the world's most celebrated destinations for land-based whale watching.

The nearby Hemel-en-Aarde Valley offers outstanding wine experiences, beautiful vineyards and memorable lunches overlooking the mountains.

There are magnificent beaches, coastal walks, charming small towns and countless opportunities to explore the Whale Coast.

And for guests who prefer to stay closer to home, the Bot River Lagoon offers kayaking, birdwatching and peaceful moments on the water when conditions allow.

That is what makes this location so appealing.

You can spend the morning watching whales, enjoy a long lunch at a wine estate and return to your own private retreat for an evening beside the pool.

The best of the Whale Coast, without having to stay in the middle of the crowds.

The Perfect South African Family Holiday – With Room for Everyone

Some of our favourite guest experiences involve families and friends spending time together.

And we understand why.

Travelling with several people is wonderful, but it is not always easy to find accommodation that gives everyone enough room.

At MBIZI, up to eight guests can enjoy their holiday together without feeling that they have to spend every moment doing the same thing.

Children can enjoy the pool under appropriate supervision.

Someone can relax on the terrace.

Others can explore the lagoon or head into Hermanus.

And in the evening, everyone comes together for a meal, a braai or a glass of South African wine.

For families visiting South Africa, friends celebrating time together or couples exploring the Western Cape, a private luxury holiday home can offer a completely different experience from staying in separate hotel rooms.

It is the freedom to spend time together, while still having space to be yourself.

And for international visitors planning a longer trip, the Whale Coast is a wonderful addition to a Garden Route holiday.

Twenty Top Ratings – And Almost No Availability Left

When we first decided to share our future home with holiday guests, we had no idea how people would respond.

Would they love the quiet location as much as we do?

Would they appreciate the details we had spent so much time thinking about?

Would they understand why the lagoon and its wild horses mean so much to us?

Seven months later, we have our answer.

20 guest reviews, all awarding the highest overall rating available on their respective booking platforms.

And an almost continuously booked holiday home.

As of October 2026, there are only a few short booking gaps remaining until the end of April 2027.

Availability will naturally change, but the response so far has exceeded anything we could have imagined when we first opened our doors.

We are incredibly grateful.

To every guest who has chosen MBIZI.

To everyone who has taken the time to leave a review.

To our wonderful local team, whose care and commitment make so much possible.

And especially to the guests who have treated our home with the same love and respect that we put into creating it.

You have turned our dream into something even more special.

Could MBIZI Be Your Next Whale Coast Escape?

Perhaps you are planning a family holiday in South Africa.

Perhaps you are looking for a luxury holiday home near Hermanus with a private pool, spectacular lagoon views and enough space for eight guests.

Or perhaps you simply love the idea of waking up somewhere where wild horses might wander past your window.

Whatever brings you to the Whale Coast, we would love to share this extraordinary place with you.

We cannot promise that the horses will appear.

We cannot promise perfect weather every day.

But we can promise that MBIZI lagoon house is a home we have created with enormous love and care – and one we are genuinely delighted to share.

Twenty top-rated guest reviews have made us incredibly proud.

But what matters most is that our guests leave with wonderful memories.

And perhaps, one day, you will be part of the MBIZI story too.
