For many guests, seeing the wild horses of Fisherhaven becomes one of the most unforgettable memories of their stay. Living freely between the Bot River Lagoon, the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding fynbos, they are part of the area's unique character and can often be spotted just minutes from MBIZI — sometimes even directly from the terrace.
Unlike animals in a reserve, these horses simply go about their day. They graze, wander, rest and move naturally through the landscape, making every encounter feel authentic and completely unplanned.
The Story Behind Fisherhaven's Wild Horses
A mystery that has become part of the Whale Coast's identity.
No one knows exactly how the wild horses first arrived in Fisherhaven – and perhaps that's part of their magic.
Over the years, several stories have been passed down. The most widely told version suggests that the horses are descendants of animals once associated with a nearby military camp during the 1940s, which were left behind when the camp was abandoned. Others believe they came from surrounding farms and gradually formed a free-roaming herd.
Whatever their true origin, one thing is certain: for decades these remarkable horses have lived freely between the Bot River Lagoon, the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding fynbos, becoming one of the Whale Coast's most extraordinary natural symbols.
Today, they are carefully protected by the local community and conservation organisations, ensuring that future generations can continue to experience this unique connection between people, wildlife and landscape.

More Than Just Wild Horses

At MBIZI, seeing the wild horses isn't a scheduled activity — it's simply part of everyday life.
They may be waiting as you drive through the estate, quietly grazing along the roadside. You might spot them from the terrace over your morning coffee, watch them wander across the beach at sunset or discover them unexpectedly while exploring the lagoon.
Every encounter is different, and that's exactly what makes them so unforgettable.
Although the horses are completely wild, they sometimes seem just as curious about us as we are about them. Every now and then one strolls past the terrace, pauses outside the windows or even decides to inspect the outdoor shower before calmly continuing on its way.
These are the moments you simply can't plan — and wouldn't want to miss.
✨ Our Favourite MBIZI Moment: One morning, while enjoying our first coffee on the terrace, we noticed one of the horses quietly walking towards the house. It paused for a moment, looked around with complete curiosity... and then wandered straight into the outdoor shower, as if it had always belonged there.
We always remind our guests:
"Please don't touch the horses — they're wild."
Sometimes we can't help smiling, because it almost feels as if the horses never received that message themselves. Fortunately, they remain completely free to decide if they come a little closer. Those unexpected visits are never guaranteed, never predictable — and perhaps that's exactly what makes them so magical.
It's one of those moments that reminds us why we fell in love with MBIZI.
